To quickly and simply configure the display, the SCADA program enables us to show any `record and alarm’ values generated or measured by the instruments to which it is connected. Displayed in real time and stored to disk at a user defined rate, one can give each analogue or digital channel a unique name. To recall and display the data at any time, the SCADA software enables you and also allows exporting it to a spreadsheet program. For remote viewing of alarms, real time channel values and trending information a web interface is included using a standard web browser.
In industrial process control applications, SCADA programs are used for centralised monitoring and recording of pumps, switches, tank levels, temperatures, etc, SCADA systems are also referred to as HMI (Human Machine Interfaces).
Basically running on a PC, a SCADA program communicates with external instrumentation and control devices. Via direct serial link, modem, radio, field bus or Ethernet links are included in communications methods. Converters can be used if a mixture of instruments with differing communication interfaces and protocols need to be connected. The data is viewed and recorded centrally and for that SCADA is often used on remote data acquisition systems.
A user configured database is present in the SCADA program that informs the software about the connected instrumentation and which parameters can be assessed within the instruments. On how often the parameters of the instruments are accessed, the database may also hold information and also allowing the operator to change a value if a parameter is a read only value or read / write.
Between analogue (numeric) or logic (digital), the parameters of the instrument being accessed are normally split.
